Ireland has around 26 racecourses and racing takes place almost every day of the year. Jumps racing — hurdles, chases and bumpers — is the backbone of the Irish game through the winter, while the Flat season runs from March to November, centred on the Curragh. Irish-trained horses are a major force in Britain too, so form from Irish meetings is often the key to the big festivals at Cheltenham, Aintree and Royal Ascot.
The year starts with the Dublin Racing Festival at Leopardstown in early February, two days of top-class jumps racing including the Irish Gold Cup and the Irish Champion Hurdle, and a key guide to the Cheltenham Festival. The Irish Grand National is run at Fairyhouse on Easter Monday, and the Punchestown Festival in late April or early May closes the jumps season with five days of championship racing.
On the Flat, the Curragh hosts all five Irish Classics, from the Irish Guineas in May to the Irish Derby in early summer and the Irish St Leger in September. The Galway Races in late July and early August are the biggest week of the summer, with the Galway Plate and the Galway Hurdle. In September the Irish Champions Festival is split between Leopardstown, home of the Irish Champion Stakes, and the Curragh.
The Fairyhouse Winter Festival in early December brings the first Grade 1 races of the Irish jumps season, and the Leopardstown Christmas Festival from 26 to 29 December is one of the best meetings of the year, with the Savills Chase as its centrepiece.
Irish ground can change quickly, especially in winter, so check the going on the morning of racing and look for horses with form on similar ground. Big festival handicaps have large fields, which can suit each-way bets — compare place terms between bookmakers before you bet.
