The Coral Gold Cup is Newbury's biggest jumps race: a valuable handicap chase over a little more than three miles, run on the Saturday of a two-day meeting in late November or early December. First run as the Hennessy Gold Cup and later known as the Ladbrokes Trophy, it is one of the best-known handicap chases in Britain. Selections publish on the day of racing — see today's racing tips or the Newbury course page. 18+ BeGambleAware.
The Coral Gold Cup meeting is a two-day jumps fixture at Newbury, Friday and Saturday, in late November or early December, with the Gold Cup itself run on the Saturday. The race was first run in 1957 as the Hennessy Gold Cup and has been run at Newbury since 1960; it was later run as the Ladbrokes Trophy before Coral took over the sponsorship. The exact dates are set in each year's fixture list.
Race times and final fields are confirmed by the declarations in the days before the meeting, and the order of races can change from year to year, so the official racecard is the one to check on the day.
Newbury is a left-handed, flat and galloping track with a long home straight. Over fences it is a fair test that suits horses who travel and jump well, and the Gold Cup trip makes stamina essential.
Early-winter ground at Newbury can vary from good to soft. These are general notes about the course and time of year, not a forecast: check the official going on the morning of racing.
The Coral Gold Cup is usually shown live on ITV Racing; check the TV listings on the day. Our ITV Racing guide explains what ITV covers.
Any selections we make for the meeting publish on the morning of racing, with the horse, the price at publishing, the jockey and trainer and our written reasoning. See the Newbury racing tips page for the course guide and that day's picks, and NAP of the Day for our strongest pick on each racing day.
