Find out what an each way bet on a horse pays if it wins, places or loses. Enter your stake, odds and place terms to see the win and place parts.
£10 each way (£20 total) at 10/1 with 1/5 terms: a win returns £140, a place only returns £30, and a loser returns £0.
Not included: Rule 4 and dead heats.
An each way bet is two equal bets: one on the horse to win and one on it to place. A £5 each way bet costs £10 in total.
The place part pays a fraction of the win odds, set by the place terms. At 10/1 with 1/5 terms the place odds are 2/1, so the place part returns three times its stake.
If the horse wins, both parts pay out: the win part at full odds and the place part at the place fraction. If it only places, the win part loses and the place part pays.
It depends on the race and the bookmaker. Typical terms are 1/4 odds for two or three places in smaller fields and 1/5 odds for handicaps with more runners, but always check the terms on your bet slip.
