King's Top Tips
The Welsh Grand National is a marathon handicap chase over about three and three-quarter miles at Chepstow, run in the days just after Christmas. The long trip and testing winter ground make it one of the toughest stamina tests of the British jumps season. Selections publish on the day of racing — see today's racing tips or the Chepstow course page. 18+ BeGambleAware.
The Welsh Grand National is run at Chepstow in the days between Christmas and New Year. The race was first run in 1895 and has been staged at Chepstow since 1949. Its traditional date is 27 December, but the day is set in each year's fixture list and has moved in some years, so check the official fixture list for the current date.
Race times and final fields are confirmed by the declarations in the days before the meeting, and the order of races can change from year to year, so the official racecard is the one to check on the day.
Chepstow is a left-handed, undulating track, and its winter ground is often soft or heavy. Over this trip that makes the race a test of stamina and jumping as much as class.
These are general notes about the course and time of year, not a forecast: check the official going on the morning of racing.
The Welsh Grand National is usually shown live on ITV Racing as part of its Christmas coverage; check the TV listings on the day. Our ITV Racing guide explains what ITV covers.
Any selections we make for the meeting publish on the morning of racing, with the horse, the price at publishing, the jockey and trainer and our written reasoning. See the Chepstow racing tips page for the course guide and that day's picks, and NAP of the Day for our strongest pick on each racing day.
