King's Top Tips
British Champions Day closes the Flat season at Ascot with championship races across sprint, mile, middle-distance and staying divisions. Soft autumn ground regularly turns strong form lines upside down. Selections publish on the day of racing — see today's racing tips or the Ascot course page. 18+ BeGambleAware.
QIPCO British Champions Day 2026 is on Saturday 17 October 2026 at Ascot. It is the last big day of the British Flat season, bringing together the championship races for sprinters, milers, middle-distance horses, stayers and fillies and mares on a single afternoon. Prize money is among the highest of the British season, so the fields are usually small but very strong, often with runners from Ireland and France as well as the top British stables.
Race times and final fields are confirmed by the declarations in the days before the meeting; the order above is the usual running order, and the official racecard is the one to check on the day.
Ascot is a right-handed, galloping track with a stiff uphill finish. The sprint and the Balmoral Handicap are run on the straight course, where the draw and which part of the track is riding fastest can matter in big fields. The longer races use the round course and reward horses that stay every yard of their trip.
Mid-October ground at Ascot is often on the soft side, and the going can change through the afternoon after rain. These are general notes about the course and time of year, not a forecast: check the official going on the morning of racing, because proven form on easier ground is often the most useful thing to know about a runner at this meeting.
British Champions Day is shown live on ITV Racing in the UK, usually on ITV1, with Racing TV and Sky Sports Racing also covering the meeting. See our ITV Racing tips page on the day for the televised races.
Our Champions Day selections publish on the morning of racing, Saturday 17 October, with the horse, the price at publishing, the jockey and trainer and our written reasoning. Until then, see the Ascot racing tips page for the course guide and NAP of the Day for our strongest pick on each racing day.
